Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College women’s basketball team dropped a 90-44 decision to Brown University at the Pizzitola Center on Monday afternoon.


RIC (4-9) was paced by sophomore forward Molly Phillips (Cranston, RI) with nine points and six rebounds. Freshman guard Fatima McDonald (Attleboro, MA) chipped in with nine points, three boards and three assists in the setback for the Anchorwomen.


Freshman guard Justine Gaziano (Weymouth, MA) led the way for Brown (9-4) with 30 points and six rebounds, while sophomore forward Taylor Will (Arlington Heights, IL) and sophomore guard Shayna Mehta (San Francisco, CA) each scored 11 points in the win for the Bears.

RIC shot 31.8 percent (14-for-44) from the field, 21.4 percent (3-for-14) from three-point land and 43.3 percent (13-for-30) from the free throw line. The Bears shot 46.6 percent (34-for-74) from the field, 43.3 percent (13-for-30) from downtown and 64.3 percent (9-for-14) from the free throw line. Brown held a 49-29 advantage in rebounds for the game and forced RIC into 22 turnovers.


The Anchorwomen scored the first basket of the contest on a layup by Demers just 20 seconds into the game. Brown then used a 20-0 run, capped by a three-pointer from Gaziano, for the 20-2 lead with 4:12 left in the first quarter. The host Bears pushed the lead to 28-5 after the first quarter of play.


Brown led by as many as 26 points early in the second quarter before taking a 46-21 lead heading into the locker room at halftime. The Bears outrebounded RIC by a 28-13 margin in the first half.


Brown built the lead to as many as 29 points in the early stages of the third quarter, going ahead, 50-21, on a jumper from Heath just over a minute into the quarter. The Bears continued to build on their lead throughout the third quarter, taking a 65-34 lead heading in the final quarter.


The Bears led by as many as 46 points in the fourth quarter en route to the win.


In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume Little East Conference play at Southern Maine on Wednesday, Jan. 11 (5:30 p.m.).
