Providence, R.I.--The Rhode Island College wrestling team opened up the home portion of its 2016-17 schedule with a 22-15 victory over Western New England in a New England Wrestling Association (NEWA) match in front of a near capacity crowd at The Recreation Center on Friday night.


The evening started at 285 lbs. with RIC (1-0) senior John Georges (Cranston, RI) posting a 2-1 victory over Western New England (0-1) junior Dom Liquori (Springfield, MA) to stake the Anchormen to a 3-0 lead. RIC extended its match lead to 7-0 when sophomore Daniel Murray (Bay Shore, NY) posted a 15-4 major decision victory at 125 lbs. against WNEU freshman Giovanni Rios (Holyoke, MA). The Anchormen continued the shutout at 133 lbs. as a 10-7 win by RIC freshman Michael Scaravilli (Lodi, NJ) over WNEU junior Tim McLinden (Plaistow, NH) made the score 10-0. At 141 lbs., RIC senior Jake Dorman (Foxboro, MA) recorded a 7-1 win against WNEU freshman Austin Roche (Southborough, MA) to give the hosts their fourth straight victory.

The fifth match of the evening saw the visiting Golden Bears record their first win at 149 lbs. as WNEU freshman Chase LaRusso (Enfield, CT) posted a 7-2 win against RIC freshman Thomas Mountain (Hope, RI) to close the gap to 13-3. RIC responded with its first pin of the evening at 157 lbs. when sophomore Zach Ford (Flagler Beach, FL) notched a fall against WNEU junior Lamont Wallace (New Rochelle, NY) at 3:58 to increase the RIC lead to 16, 19-3. The Golden Bears answered right back with a pin of their own at 165 lbs. when freshman Davey Goodall (Chelmsford, MA) pinned RIC sophomore Tim Caplan (Portland, CT) at 4:31 to pull the visitors within 10, 19-9.


WNEU closed the gap to seven, 19-12, at 174 lbs. when sophomore Josh Nelson (Bristol, CT) recorded a 9-6 win against RIC freshman Sam Lindblom (Waterford, CT). One of the most anticipated matches of the evening occurred at 184 lbs. as RIC junior Michael Gallagher (Narragansett, RI), ranked No. 5 in New England, posted a thrilling, 3-2, victory against WNEU freshman John Boyle (Rowley, MA), ranked No. 4 in New England, to assure the Anchormen of the win. The final match of the evening saw WNEU senior Brian Donovan (Manchester, CT) post a 7-3 win at 197 lbs. over RIC junior Javante Johnson (Wakefield, RI).
