HOW IT HAPPENED
• The win for RIC snapped a six-game losing streak against UMass
Boston, giving the Anchormen their first victory over the Beacons
since Nov. 1, 2014. Rhode Island College were eliminated by the
Beacons in the Little East tourney in each of the previous three
• Vazquez took a free kick after
UMass Boston was whistled for a foul in the 18th minute.
The senior midfielder then buried the ensuing shot from 35 yards out
into the upper right corner of the net to put the Anchormen up, 1-0.
• Despite carrying play and holding
the advantage in quality scoring opportunities, Rhode Island College
found itself being outshot, 9-8, after the first 45 minutes.
• UMass Boston had a solid scoring opportunity early
in the second half after the Anchormen were whistled for a foul.
Senior midfielder Daniel Morales (San Diego, CA) then took
the free kick from 25 yards out, but the shot was stopped by RIC
sophomore goalkeeper Charlie Tashjian (West Warwick, RI) to
preserve the 1-0 lead
• Vazquez added an insurance goal for
RIC in the 88th minute when he scored his eighth goal of
the season, an unassisted tally on a breakaway after a Beacon failed
clear, to propel the Anchormen to the 2-0 victory.
• Tashjian (8-6-2) made eight stops
for RIC in the victory, while sophomore goalkeeper Aidan Carter
(Weymouth, MA) and sophomore Omar Gastro Dreher (Woonsocket,
RI) each tallied two saves for UMass Boston in the setback.
Carter took the loss (3-3).
