RIC sophomore guard CJ Donaldson (Bridgeport, CT) and
junior forward Justin Campbell (New Haven, CT) each scored 16
Freshman guard AJ Pettway
(Worcester, MA) was also in double figures with 11 points and
three assists in the setback for the Anchormen.
Wheaton was led by senior forward
Liam Bruno (Newton, MA) with 19 points, six rebounds and two
assists, while junior forward Duaka Ekwensi (Morris Plains, NJ)
also had 19 points to go with four rebounds and four assists for
Senor guard Ryan Fogarty
(Walpole, MA) and junior guard David Carbonello (Windham, MA)
each tallied 11 points in the victory for the Lyons.
Both teams traded baskets early on
with neither squad leading by more than five points during the early
stages of the contest.
RIC trailed by just four points
when a layup by Pettway with 8:05 left in the first half made the
Wheaton then used a 15-4 run,
capped by a three-pointer from Bruno, to take its largest lead of
the stanza, 37-22, with 3:06 left on the clock.
The host Lyons took a 40-29 lead
heading into the locker room at halftime.
RIC responded early in the second
half and cut the lead down to 54-48 on a pair of free throws with
11:53 remaining in the contest.
RIC trimmed the deficit to six
several times down the stretch, but the hosts advanced to the title
game with the win.
