Anchormen Cap Regular Season With, 8-3, Win Over Nichols

Providence, R.I.--Sophomore left fielder Justin Wardwell (Westport, Mass.) had a three-run triple as the Rhode Island College baseball team defeated Nichols, 8-3, to close out the 2022 regular season at Pontarelli Field on Sunday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC notched four runs in the bottom of the first inning as Wardwell cleared the bases with a triple.
 
• Nichols scored twice in the top of the fifth inning after loading the bases, cutting the RIC lead in half, 4-2.
 
• Sophomore second baseman Cal Parrillo (Greenville, R.I.) immediately took those runs back in the bottom of the stanza with a towering two-run blast. RIC would end the inning up by five, 7-2.
 
• Each squad would score one more time, but the Nichols offense could not reach base in the ninth inning against junior pitcher Shaun Gamelin (West Kingston, R.I.), who struck out the side to seal the victory.
 
• Junior pitcher Connor Davey (Cheshire, Conn.) got his sixth win of the year (6-2).
 
• Nichols freshman starter Sean Ryan (Hopedale, Mass.) was the losing pitcher (2-3).
 
• Parrillo went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI to go along with his home run.
 
• Wardwell finished 1-for-3 with the three-run triple.
 
• RIC finished up the regular season with a 17-2 record at Pontarelli Field.

• Sophomore center fielder Cameron Santerre (Bristol, R.I.) established a new program record for being hit by a pitch in a single season (17) when he was plunked in the bottom of the first.
 
 WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, No. 2 seeded Rhode Island College will face No. 5-seeded UMass Dartmouth in opening round action of the 2022 Little East Baseball Championship on Wednesday, May 11 (3:30 p.m.) at Eastern Connecticut.
