Gibau and Pires Score in, 16-2, Loss at Mass. Maritime in 2023 Season Opener

Buzzards Bay, Mass.--Freshman attacker Sydnee Pires (Rochester, Mass.) scored her first collegiate goal as the Rhode Island College women's lacrosse team was defeated by Mass. Maritime, 16-2, in the Anchorwomen's 2023 season opener on Tuesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Buccaneers got on the board early and often, scoring five goals in the first quarter. Junior midfielder Cassie Llewellen (Fairfield, Conn.) scored twice and assisted on another.
 
•  The hosts kept the good times rolling, scoring another three goals in the second quarter, and led, 8-0, at the break. Llewellen completed the hat trick in the period and the Bucs outshot the Anchorwomen, 21-2, in the first half.
 
• RIC was able to grab goals from Pires and senior attacker Amara Gibau (North Providence, R.I.) in the third and fourth quarters.
 
• RIC junior goalkeeper Olivia Brennan (Portsmouth, R.I.) made five saves in the loss (0-1).
 
• MM senior goalkeeper Sue Bird (Duxbury, Mass.) earned the win (1-2) with a pair of saves on the night.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Regis on Thursday, March 9 (1 p.m.).
