Kelly and Alfonso Lead Anchormen in Home Tri-Meet Split

Providence, R.I.—Senior 184 lbs. Matthew Kelly (Katonah, N.Y.) and classmate 285 lbs. Michael Alfonso (Garfield, N.J.) each went 2-0 as Rhode Island College split a tri-match, defeating Plymouth State, 48-5, and falling, 19-18, vs. WPI, at the Recreation Center on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• RIC won the first five bouts vs. the Panthers as senior 125 lbs. Fred Luchs (Belford, N.J.), junior 133 lbs. Brett Redner (Butler, N.J.) and freshman 141 lbs. Sebastian Armstrong (Coventry, R.I.) each pinner their opponents.
 
• After a technical fall win by the Panthers, RIC closed out the match with four straight wins, highlighted by pins from senior 174 lbs. Aidan Faria (Cumberland, R.I.), sophomore 197 lbs. Anthony Fernandez (Nashua, N.H.) and Alfonso.

• After WPI steamrolled Plymouth State, 48-8, with eight pins, the Engineers opened play vs. the Anchormen with three straight decisions to go up, 9-0.
 
• Senior 165 lbs. Christopher McCarthy (Middletown, N.J.) picked up a technical fall win and Kelly pinned his opponent to pull the hosts within two, 13-11.
 
• Alfonso's major decision cut the Anchormen's deficit down to one point, 16-15.
 
• WPI senior Tanner Thatcher (Blairstown, N.J.) faced Luchs in a battle of the fourth and fifth-ranked wrestlers at 125 lbs. in the New England Wrestling Association (NEWA), respectively. A late escape by Luchs forced extra time, but Thatcher scored a takedown in sudden victory to put the Engineers up by four, 19-15, with one match to go.
 
• Senior 133 lbs. Kwesi Amoa (Central Islip, N.Y.) won, 7-4, as RIC fell a point short of equaling WPI's effort on the day.
