2024-25 Rhode Island College Wrestling Season Summary

Providence, R.I.—Head Coach Jay Jones guided the Anchormen to a 15-8 overall record on the season.
 
RIC finished 10th (18 teams) at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship with a team score of 48.5 on March 1-2.
 
Senior Michael Alfonso (Garfield, N.J.) closed out his career with a 74-29 record at 285 lbs. to go along with 46 pins, 102 takedowns, nine reversals, 60 escapes and 16 near-falls. 
 
As a senior in 2024-25, Alfonso earned All-Region honors with an eighth place finish at 285 lbs. at the 2025 NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship on March 1-2. He was also named a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NCWA) Scholar All-American and was named Honorable Mention All-NEWA as well as to the league's All-Academic Team. Alfonso was 24-9 at 285 lbs. with 12 pins, 35 takedowns, one reversal, 19 escapes and two near-falls. He placed second at 285 lbs. at both the RIC Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 9 and the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 23.
 
As a junior in 2023-24, Alfonso was named a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American and was named to the NEWA All-Academic Team. He went 18-8 with 12 pins, 25 takedowns, one reversal, 17 escapes and five near-falls. Alfonso was first at 285 lbs. at the Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 4, second at the Wildcat Open on Jan. 28 and sixth at 285 lbs. at the NEWA Futures Tournament on Feb. 25.
 
As a sophomore in 2022-23, Alfonso was named National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American and was a NEWA All-Academic selection. Alfonso went 18-7 at 285 lbs. with 12 pins, 25 takedowns, three reversals, 18 escapes and six near-falls on the season. He finished fifth at 285 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational.
 
As a freshman in 2021-22, Alfonso was 14-5 at 285 lbs. with 10 pins, 17 takedowns, four reversals, six escapes and three near-falls. He was named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA).
 
He is an elementary education major with a concentration in special education and a 2020 graduate of Garfield High School.
 
Senior Kwesi Amoa (Central Islip, N.Y.) closed out his career with a 49-35 record at 133 lbs. to go along with nine pins, 114 takedowns, 10 reversals, 33 escapes and 42 near-falls. 
 
As a senior in 2024-25, Amoa was named to the NEWA All-Academic Team. He was 16-12 at133 lbs. with five pins, 36 takedowns, three reversals, 14 escapes and nine near-falls. Amoa placed second at 133 lbs. at RIC's Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 9.
 
As a junior in 2023-24, Amoa was named a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American and was named to the NEWA All-Academic Team. He went 11-4 with 25 takedowns, one reversal, three escapes and 10 near-falls. Amoa finished fourth at 133 lbs. at the NEWA Futures on Feb. 25.
 
As a sophomore in 2022-23, Amoa as named to the NEWA All-Academic Team. He went 11-7 at mainly 133 lbs. with three pins, 29 takedowns, one reversal, eight escapes and 12 near-falls.
 
As a freshman in 2021-22, Amoa was 11-12 at 125 lbs. with one pin, 24 takedowns, five reversals, eight escapes and 11 near-falls. Amoa finished second at 125 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 20.
 
Senior Matthew Kelly (Katonah, N.Y.) closed out his career with a 45-9 record at 197 lbs. with 17 pins, 47 takedowns, 11 reversals, 17 escapes and 62 near-falls.
 
As a senior in 2024-25, Kelly competed at the 2025 NCAA Div. III Wrestling National Championship where he went 1-2 on March 14. He earned All-Region honors and finished second at 197 lbs. at the 2025 NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship on March 1-2. Kelly was named Second Team All-NEWA and to the NEWA All-Academic Team. He was 23-3 at 197 lbs. with 10 pins, 22 takedowns, four reversals, seven escapes and 25 near-falls. He garnered one NEWA Wrestler of the Week award for the season. Kelly earned a first place finish at 197 lbs. during RIC's Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 9. 
 
As a junior in 2023-24, Kelly earned All-Region honors with a sixth place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on March 2-3 and was an Honorable Mention to the All-NEWA Team. He went 22-6 with seven pins, 25 takedowns, seven reversals, 10 escapes and 37 near-falls. Kelly first at 197 lbs. at the Veterans All-American Classic and fourth at both the Doug Parker Invitational (197 lbs.) on Nov. 18 and the Pete Willson Invitational (184 lbs.) on Jan. 26-27.
 
Prior to coming to RIC, Kelly spent his freshman year at Binghamton and his sophomore campaign at New York University.
 
He is a psychology major and a 2020 graduate of Iona Prep.
 
Senior Fred Luchs (Belford, N.J.) closed out his career with a 74-29 record at 125 lbs. to go along with 40 pins, 120 takedowns, 14 reversals, 65 escapes and 71 near-falls.
 
As a senior in 2024-25, Luchs went 18-11 at 125 lbs. with eight pins, 31 takedowns, three reversals, 22 escapes and 19 near-falls. He placed first at 125 lbs. during the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 23. Luchs also finished sixth at 125 lbs. during the Pete Willson Invitational on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
 
As a junior in 2023-24, Luchs earned All-Region honors with a fourth place finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on March 2-3, was named a National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American and was an Honorable Mention to the All-NEWA Team. He went 26-8 with 13 pins, 44 takedowns, six reversals, 28 escapes and 32 near-falls. Luchs finished second at 125 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 18 and fifth at the Pete Willson Invitational on Jan. 26-27.
 
As a sophomore in 2022-23, Luchs went 9-2 at 125 lbs. with seven pins, 11 takedowns, three escapes and four near-falls. He finished sixth at 125 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational.
 
As a freshman in 2021-22, Luchs earned All-Region honors at 125 lbs. with a fifth place finish at the NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship. He was 21-8 at 125 lbs. with 12 pins, 34 takedowns, five reversals, 12 escapes and 16 near-falls. Luchs was the individual champion at 125 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational on Nov. 20.
 
He is a business management major and a marketing minor and a 2020 graduate of Middletown North High School.
 
Senior Christopher McCarthy (Middletown, N.J.) closed out his career with a 54-46 record at 165 lbs. to go along with 12 pins, 114 takedowns, 15 reversals, 86 escapes and 73 near-falls.
 
As a senior in 2024-25, McCarthy earned All-Region honors with an eighth place finish at 165 lbs. as he went 2-3 at the 2025 NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship on March 1-2. He was named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NCWA), Honorable Mention All-NEWA and to the league's All-Academic Team. He was 17-8 at 165 lbs. with two pins, 34 takedowns, five reversals, 21 escapes and 28 near-falls. McCarthy finished second at 165 lbs. during RIC's Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 9.
 
As a junior in 2023-24, McCarthy was named to the NEWA All-Academic Team. He went 15-12 with two pins, 40 takedowns, five reversals, 20 escapes and 28 near-falls.
 
As a sophomore in 2022-23, McCarthy went 14-12 at mainly 174 lbs. with seven pins, 21 takedowns, three reversals, 17 escapes and 13 near-falls. He finished sixth at 174 lbs. at the Doug Parker Invitational.
 
As a freshman in 2021-22, McCarthy was 8-14 at 174 lbs. with one pin, 19 takedowns, two reversals, 28 escapes and four near-falls.
 
He is an accounting major with a finance minor and a 2020 graduate of Middletown North High School.
 
Senior Michael Pestana (North Bergen, N.J.) closed out his career with a 46-66 record at 149 lbs. to go along with 14 pins, 91 takedowns, 17 reversals, 129 escapes and 33 near-falls.
 
As a senior in 2024-25, Pestana was 15-14 at 149 lbs. with four pins, 25 takedowns, six reversals, 39 escapes and five near-falls. He went 2-2 at the 2025 NCAA Div. III Northeast Regional Championship on March 1-2. Pestana finished fourth at 149 lbs. during RIC's Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 9.
 
As a junior in 2023-24, Pestana went 16-15 with six pins, 31 takedowns, one reversal, 34 escapes and seven near-falls. He was named to the NEWA Dual Championship All-Tournament Team.
 
As a sophomore in 2022-23, Pestana went 8-17 at mainly 141 lbs. with two pins, 17 takedowns, one reversal, 26 escapes and nine near-falls.
 
As a freshman in 2021-22, Pestana was 7-20 at 149 lbs. with two pins, 18 takedowns, nine reversals, 30 escapes and 12 near-falls.
 
Senior Oscar Serrano (Toms River, N.J.) closed out his career with a 10-19 record at 149 lbs. to go along with five pins, 23 takedowns, four reversals, 28 escapes and 10 near-falls.
 
As a senior in 2024-25, Serrano was 5-15 at 157 lbs. with two pins, 14 takedowns, three reversals, 22 escapes and six near-falls.
 
As a junior in 2023-24, Serrano went 5-4 with three pins, nine takedowns, one reversal, six escapes and four near-falls.
 
He is a health science major and a 2020 graduate of Toms River High School. Prior to coming to RIC, Serrano attended Union County College.
 
Junior Jacob Duval (New Bedford, Mass.) closed out his career with a 18-35 record at 133 lbs. to go along with six pins, 44 takedowns, six reversals, 36 escapes and 15 near-falls.
 
As a junior in 2024-25, Duval went 6-10 at 149 lbs. with three pins, nine takedowns, six escapes and four near-falls.
 
In 2023-24, Duval was 1-0 at 141 lbs. with one takedown and one escape before an injury cut short his season.
 
As a sophomore in 2022-23, Duval went 8-13 at mainly 133 lbs. with three pins, 22 takedowns, five reversals and 11 escapes and nine near-falls.
 
As a freshman in 2021-22, Duval was 3-12 at 133 lbs. with 12 takedowns, one reversal, 18 escapes and two near-falls.
 
He is a business major and a 2021 graduate of New Bedford High School.
 
Senior Aidan Faria (Cumberland, R.I.) went 24-9 at 174 lbs. with five pins, 56 takedowns, two reversals, 21 escapes and 24 near-falls. He was named a Scholar All-American by the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) and was named to the NEWA All-Academic Team. Faria placed fourth at 174 lbs. during the Pete Willson Invitational on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.  He also finished second at 174 lbs. during RIC's Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 9.
 
Senior Hunter Lundberg (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) went 9-12 at 141 lbs. with two pins, 26 takedowns, one reversal, 29 escapes and four near-falls. He finished third at 141 lbs. during RIC's Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 9.
 
Junior Dillon Carter (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) went 5-9 at 157 lbs. with one pin, 20 takedowns, five reversals, 17 escapes and two near-falls. 
 
Junior Wil Hunt (Providence, R.I.) went 5-4 at 165 lbs. with 25 takedowns, two reversals, two escapes and six near-falls. He finished fourth at 165 lbs. during RIC's Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 9.
 
Junior Scott Lallas (Farmington, N.H.) went 11-15 at 165 lbs. with four pins, 30 takedowns, five reversals, 28 escapes and eight near-falls. 
 
Junior Cooper Lavigne (East Hartford, Conn.) went 12-17 at 157 lbs. with six pins, 15 takedowns, nine reversals, 17 escapes and nine near-falls. 
 
Junior Brett Redner (Butler, N.J.) went 14-9 at 133 lbs. with seven pins, 30 takedowns, six reversals, 18 escapes and 19 near-falls. 
 
Junior Juan Rodriguez (Dix Hills, N.Y.) went 2-11 at 174 lbs. with four takedowns, two reversals, 10 escapes and two near-falls. 
 
Junior Robert Stone (Deer Park, N.Y.) went 19-3 at 125 lbs. with 13 pins, 34 takedowns, two reversals, three escapes and 13 near-falls. He placed third at 125 lbs. during JWU's Wildcat Open on Jan. 25. Stone also finished third at 125 lbs. during the NEWA Futures Tournament on Feb. 23. 
 
Sophomore Yuilcal Cruz (Providence, R.I.) went 3-5 at 174 lbs. with two pins, four takedowns, two reversals and two escapes. 
 
Sophomore Anthony Fernandez (Nashua, N.H.) went 20-15 at 197 lbs. with 11 pins, 28 takedowns, six reversals, 31 escapes and 13 near-falls. He finished third at 197 lbs. during RIC's Veterans All-American Classic on Nov. 9.
 
Sophomore Roel Johnson (Avon, Conn.) went 3-6 at 184 lbs. with nine takedowns, one reversal, seven escapes and one near-fall. 
 
Sophomore Owen Roche (Shrewsbury, Mass.) went 7-9 at at 149 lbs. with seven pins, 10 takedowns, one reversal, 15 escapes and four near-falls. 
 
Sophomore Ethan Silva (Bellingham, Mass.) went 0-12 at 174 lbs. with two takedowns, four reversals and four escapes.
