Matt Murphy begins his second season as an assistant baseball coach at Rhode Island College.
He works in all phases of the RIC baseball team, focusing primarily on the pitching staff and assisting with recruiting efforts.
Murphy, a 2019 graduate of the University of Rhode Island, earned Atlantic 10 Pitcher of the Week honors three times in his junior season and tied the school record for appearances in a season with 15 in 2017 for the Rams. He finished his collegiate career with a 9-7 record and a 3.41 ERA.
Before transferring to URI, Murphy was a two-year starter at Assumption College. As a freshman, Murphy played in 38 games, starting all of them. As a shortstop, he led the team with 116 assists, added 52 putouts and was tied for the team lead with seven stolen bases.
Murphy was named Northeast-10 Third Team All-Conference as a utility selection and was a member of the Worcester All Area First-Team as a utility player as a sophomore. He started in 38 games as a shortstop and made nine appearances as a pitcher. Murphy led the team with a .341 batting average and had a team-high 103 assists along to go along with 67 putouts.
Murphy is a Warwick, Rhode Island native. He most recently played professionally for the Technika Brno (Brno, Czech Republic) from May to June of 2019. He also played in The Frontier Professional Baseball League for the Traverse City Beach Bums in 2018.
