The 2006-07 Rhode Island College men’s basketball team is one of the program’s greatest editions.
Head Coach
Bob Walsh’s team went 27-4 overall and 12-2 (first place) in the Little East. The Anchormen captured the Little East Regular Season Championship and went on to win the LEC Tournament title.
After defeating longtime rival Keene State, 87-75, in the Little East Championship, the Anchormen advanced to the NCAA Div. III Men’s Basketball Tournament.
RIC hosted the first and second rounds of the NCAAs at The Murray Center. In front of two capacity crowds, the Anchormen defeated Coast Guard, 64-60, in the first round and then Brandeis, 70-67, to advance to the Sweet 16.
Rhode Island College traveled to Amherst’s LeFrak Gymnasium and once again faced Keene State, downing the Owls, 75-73, to reach the Elite 8.
The Anchormen’s bid to reach the Final Four came to an end in an 81-69 setback vs. host Amherst, who subsequently went on to win the National Championship.
In addition to Walsh,
Kinsey Durgin ’08,
Kamari Williams ’08 and
Bobby Bailey ’10 have all been enshrined in RIC’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
During the season, RIC won 14 of its first 15 games and had two 11-game winning streaks. The 27 wins in a single season remains a program record and the Elite 8 is the farthest a men’s basketball team has ever gone in the NCAA Tournament.
