Sean Diaz (Providence, R.I.) earned his first career victory as the Rhode Island College baseball team defeated Alvernia, 7-5, at Terry Park in the Gene Cusic Classic on Wednesday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Wolves started the scoring in the fourth inning, plating three runs in the top of the frame. The Anchormen clawed back with a run of their own in the inning and trailed, 3-1, after four.

• The RIC bats woke up in the later stages of the ballgame, getting two runs in the sixth and four in the eighth. A few Alvernia miscues allowed for a good portion of the runs and RIC led by four, 7-3, going into the ninth.

• Alvernia struck for a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but could not manufacture the tying runs.

• Freshman second baseman
Lucas McElroy (Westport, Mass.) knocked in two runs.

• Sophomore first baseman
Daniel Trzepacz (Mont Vernon, N.H.) had the lone extra base-hit for the Anchormen and also scored twice.

• Diaz notched the win (1-0), striking out four in four innings of relief.
