Sean Diaz Earns First Collegiate Win in, 7-5, Victory Over Alvernia

Fort Myers, Fla.--Freshman pitcher Sean Diaz (Providence, R.I.) earned his first career victory as the Rhode Island College baseball team defeated Alvernia, 7-5, at Terry Park in the Gene Cusic Classic on Wednesday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• The Wolves started the scoring in the fourth inning, plating three runs in the top of the frame. The Anchormen clawed back with a run of their own in the inning and trailed, 3-1, after four.
 
• The RIC bats woke up in the later stages of the ballgame, getting two runs in the sixth and four in the eighth. A few Alvernia miscues allowed for a good portion of the runs and RIC led by four, 7-3, going into the ninth.
 
• Alvernia struck for a pair of runs in the top of the ninth, but could not manufacture the tying runs.
 
• Freshman second baseman Lucas McElroy (Westport, Mass.) knocked in two runs.
 
• Sophomore first baseman Daniel Trzepacz (Mont Vernon, N.H.) had the lone extra base-hit for the Anchormen and also scored twice.
 
• Diaz notched the win (1-0), striking out four in four innings of relief.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will face Lebanon Valley as part of the Snowbird Classic on Thursday, March 10 (10 a.m.).
