Schuermann Ties a Career-High as RIC Downs Lions, 82-70, in Home Opener

Providence, R.I.--Junior guard Meagan Schuermann (Cooperstown, N.Y.) tied a career-high with 27 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Rhode Island College women's basketball defeated The College Of New Jersey, 82-70, at The Murray Center on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED
• Schuermann's 11 points in the first quarter and a three-pointer from sophomore guard Shalyn Smith (Middletown, Conn.) to beat the buzzer gave the hosts a 12-point, 26-14, lead going into the next stanza.
 
• The Lions and Anchorwomen traded tough buckets in the second quarter, but it was the hosts who held the lead at the break, 42-35.
 
• Freshman forward Eva Monahan (Woodstock, Conn.) posted nine of her 13 points in the third quarter as the Anchorwomen built their lead back up to double-digits, 59-48, with 10 minutes to play.
 
• Despite losing the turnover battle in the fourth quarter, RIC was able to hang on for their first win at home this season.
 
• Junior guard Abby Wager (Mansfield, Mass.) just missed a double-double with 18 points and nine rebounds.
 
• Schuermann also blocked three shots and collected three steals.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will host Johnson and Wales on Sunday, Nov. 16 (1 p.m.).
