The construction of the new outdoor track complex at Rhode Island College is entering its final stage. This, the third stage, includes the construction of a building that will host concessions, rest rooms and auxiliary spaces to support athletics. This phase also includes the construction of all ADA walkways around the facility.
Phase 1 included an eight-lane waffle system track surface and all the accompanying field event areas. Phase 2 included new ADA seating for 1,000 spectators, as well a state-of-the-art press box and filming platform.
An NCAA standard throws area was completed several years ago adjacent to the current project. In addition to the Black Track, the facility includes an NCAA regulation natural grass facility. The final project will also include a new video board that will allow the facility to transition from sport to sport, but especially track.
Director of Athletics
Don Tencher said, "This facility has been a long time coming, but it is definitely worth the wait. This facility will further showcase the college's top-notch athletic facilities and this new outdoor track facility will surely be one of the best in the State. It will also allow the college to host even more premier events."
RIC was recently recognized by one of the Providence Journal's top writers for having the best venues to watch an interscholastic championship and RIC is committed to continue to host these and other events.
The complex, with over 750 parking spots within its footprint, combined with its proximity to restaurants and hotels, make it an even more viable complex to host large, premier events. Tencher played a pivotal role in the acquisition of this property over 20 years ago and had a vision back then to create the complex that is so to be a reality.
"All of our student-athletes, who dedicate themselves to representing the college as well as the state, deserve to have the best facilities to showcase their talent that resources will allow," Tencher added.
The facility is slated for completion in early Spring of 2026. Tencher noted the construction would not have been possible without the leadership of RIC President
Jack Warner, who as a former student-athlete, is fully aware of the importance of athletics and that top-notch athletic facilities create a welcoming front porch for a university.
