Stenhouse’s RIC career didn’t start until 1968, but he was well accomplished before and after he came to Providence.

He was a 1951 Rhode Island Schoolboy of the Year for his talents on the baseball field, which led him to URI, where he graduated in 1955 with a degree in Industrial Technology.

His talents in baseball led him to the Major Leagues, where he played three years in the MLB with the Washington Senators. In 1962, his first year with Washington, he became the first rookie in MLB history to start the All-Star game.

He also earned Rhode Island Athlete of the Year in 1962 as well.

After Stenhouse’s playing career ended, he wound up at RIC as the manager of the Baseball team. He coached the Anchormen from 1968-1980, including leading the 1978 team to the college world series, making them the first team from Rhode Island to make the college tournament.
