Mason Choice ’15 was an outstanding guard on the men’s basketball team from 2008-12.
Over the course of his career, he helped lead the Anchormen to three Little East Regular Season, two Little East Tournament Championships and reach the NCAA Div. III Tournament in each of his four years.
He closed out his four-year career having played in 116 games, starting 99 of them. He departed as the all-time leader at RIC in career games played. He totaled 1,382 points, 586 rebounds, 286 assists, 133 steals and 48 blocked shots in his four seasons with the Anchormen. Choice averaged 11.9 points, 5.1 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.1 steals for his career. At the conclusion of his career, he ranked ninth all-time at RIC in career points and is 13th in career assists.
As a senior in 2011-2012, Choice was named First Team All-Little East for the third consecutive season. He played in 29 games, starting all of them. He averaged 13.1 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game. This season, Choice ranked among the top 10 in the Little East Conference in points, rebounds, assists and free throw percentage, while ranking third in field goal percentage. He scored a season-high 23 points at Southern Maine on Feb. 11, hauled in 12 rebounds against Plymouth State on Feb. 21, swiped four steals against Eastern Connecticut on Jan. 28, blocked three shots against Southern Maine on Jan. 10 and dished out seven assists twice on the year.
Choice cracked double-digit scoring on 22 different occasions, including the last eight games of the season. He also posted a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds against Plymouth State on Feb. 21. In one of the biggest wins of the season for the Anchormen, Choice buried a pair of free throws with 8.6 seconds remaining to cap off the, 75-74, come-from-behind victory over Western Connecticut that sent RIC to the Little East Conference Tournament Championship game.
As a junior in 2010-2011, Choice was named First Team All-Little East, Second Team All-ECAC and to the league's All-Defensive Team. He played in 29 games, starting all of them. Choice averaged 12.1 points, a team-high 5.6 rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game. He tallied 19 double-digit scoring games, highlighted by a 24-point effort at Roger Williams on Jan. 5. He had a pair of double-doubles on the year: 12 points and a season-high 12 rebounds in a season-defining win at Western Connecticut on Feb. 8 and 15 points to go along with 11 rebounds at WPI on Dec. 9. He reached the 1,000 career-point milestone in the season-ending loss to Amherst on March 11. Choice dished out a season-high nine assists at Salve Regina on Dec. 7 and grabbed four steals in four games. He was named Little East Men’s Basketball Player of the Week once.
As a sophomore in 2009-2010, Choice was named First Team All-Little East and to the league’s All-Defensive Team. He played in 29 games, starting 28 of them. Choice ranked third on the team in scoring, was second in assists and fourth in rebounds. He averaged 13.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Choice registered season-highs of 24 points and five steals at Keene State on Jan. 9, seven assists vs. UMass Dartmouth on Jan. 26 and seven rebounds on multiple occasions.
As a freshman in 2008-2009, Choice was named to the Little East Men’s Basketball All-Rookie Team. He played in 29 games, starting 13 of them. He averaged 9.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.1 assists per game. Choice had season-highs of 22 points at UMass Dartmouth on Jan. 20, 10 rebounds vs. Keene State on Dec. 13 and four assists at Salve Regina on Jan. 6. He was named Men’s Basketball Rookie of the Week twice.
He is a 2008 graduate of Rogers High School where he earned All-State, All-County and Player of the Year honors in basketball.
Choice earned a bachelor’s degree from Rhode Island College in mass. media communications in 2015.
He is currently the Dean of Students at Argosy Collegiate Charter School in Fall River, Mass.
