Stephen Lynch was an outstanding goalkeeper on Rhode Island College’s men’s soccer team from 1978-81. The Smithfield, Rhode Island native captained and was named the team MVP of the 1981 team, which posted a 10-4-4 record. Lynch backstopped the team to a school-record nine shutouts that season.

Lynch owns a 1.00 career goals against average, which currently ranks third all-time in school history. He also logged 13 career shutouts, which ranks fourth. Lynch was named to the College’s All-75th Anniversary Men’s Soccer Team in 2005. 

He earned a bachelor’s degree in social work from Rhode Island College in 1982. Lynch is currently a Detective Commander, holding the rank of captain, with the Rhode Island State Police. He is a 1986 graduate of the Rhode Island State Police Academy. During his career, he has been the recipient of 30 departmental commendations. After serving in the uniform division, Lynch transferred to detectives in 1991 and has held various positions including the Officer in Charge of Major Crimes and Violent Fugitive Unit.

Lynch received the Rhode Island College Social Work Alumni Honor Roll Award in 2006.

He resides in North Scituate, Rhode Island with his wife Ann. They have two children: Matthew (19) and Kelsey (15).
